How do I update the SAMi app to get the latest version?

If you are not a SAMi kit owner (you are using your own WiFi router) then simply use the App Store application on your iPhone/iPad/iPad to update the SAMi3 app.

If you are using the SAMi router and have already installed the SAMi3 app using your own iTunes account then switch your iPad/iPod to your home WiFi network (to connect to the internet) and use the App Store application to update the SAMi3 app. Don't forget to switch back to the SAMi WiFi network when you are done.

If you have not yet installed the SAMi3 app on your iPad/iPod, follow these instructions:

WARNING: These steps are more complicated than we would like, but this is how Apple does it. Read through the instructions first and do not proceed unless you feel comfortable following them.
You will need an iTunes account, and even though the SAMi3 app is free an iTunes account requires a linked credit card. Set this up first if you don’t already have an iTunes account by visiting “appleid.apple.com” using a browser on a computer.

Connect the iPad/iPod to your home Wi­Fi network so it can access the internet.

  1. Touch the settings (the gear icon at the bottom).

  2. Select the Wi­Fi settings (second from the top in the main settings screen).

  3. Select your home Wi­Fi network.

  4. Enter your password and choose "Join."

  5. Confirm that your network is now selected (it should have a check mark).

  6. Exit by pressing "Settings" in the upper left.

Scroll down in the settings app until you see "iTunes & App Store" and then select it.

  1. Select the Apple ID and enter in your own Apple ID.

  2. Enter your password.

  3. Press "Sign in."

Now check that your iPad/iPod device is running the latest version of iOS.

  1. Touch “Back” and select “General” -> “Software Update”

  2. If there is an update install it.

Now delete the SAMi3 app and reinstall it with your Apple ID.

  1. If necessary exit settings by pressing the home button.

  2. Delete the SAMi app. To do this press and hold on the SAMi app until you see all the icons "dancing" then touch the "X" on the SAMi app.

  3. Click the home button.

  4. Select the "App Store."

  5. Search for "SAMi3"

  6. Install the app. Be sure it is the "SAMi3 Sleep Activity Monitor By HiPass Design LLC".

Finally you need to "forget" your home network and reconnect to the SAMi Router. It is
important to "forget" your home network because if you do not, the iPod might connect to it
without warning disconnecting SAMi from the camera.

  1. Select "Settings."

  2. Select "Wi­Fi."

  3. Select the button to the right of the currently selected network (either a blue forward arrow or "i" in a circle).

  4. Select "Forget this Network."

  5. Confirm the "Forget."

  6. Select "Wi­Fi" in the upper left to return to the list of networks.

  7. Now select the "SAMi" network if it has not already been selected for you.

  8. Press the home button to exit settings.

How do I connect the SAMi3 app to the SAMi-3 camera?

  1. Connect your camera to your WiFi router with an Ethernet wire. Be sure you plug into a "LAN" jack, not the "WAN" jack. Note that if you are using the SAMi router, you can skip this step and connect without the Ethernet wire.
  2. Plug in the camera power. Wait for the Power light to turn green, then red, then green again.
  3. Using an opened paper clip, press the reset button on the side of the camera. Wait for the Power light to turn green, then red, then green again.
  4. Start the SAMi3 app.
  5. Select Settings, then Add SAMi-3 Network Camera. If you see "Camera Settings" instead, select this then scroll to the bottom and select Remove Camera. The Add Camera option will then appear.
  6. The camera should then be discovered and you will be stepped through the setup process.

How do I install the SAMi app?

The SAMi app is a free download from the Apple app store.

You will need an Apple ID before you can install the app. You can get one here:

If you have a SAMi-3 camera, start the app store app on your iOS device. Search for "SAMi3". Select the result called "SAMi3 Sleep Activity Monitor By HiPass Design LLC". Here is a direct link to the app:

What if I receive a text message or call while I am using the app?

The SAMi application will be suspended while you answer a call. At the end of a call, SAMi will resume. Notifications appear briefly, and will will not interrupt SAMi unless you leave the application to read  or respond to a text message. Note that the camera will continue to make recordings even when the SAMi app is not running. These will transfer to your IOS device once you start SAMi again.

What is the difference between using the border setting with SmartEdge and without it?

Any motion in the border is ignored.  This is used to exclude areas where regular motion occurs (like the motion of a fan for example) that is not relevant to the movement you want to monitor.

If SmartEdge is on the border size is fixed.  If there is motion in the border before motion in the center, the alarm is suppressed.  If there is motion in the center first, the alarm will sound as usual.  This feature helps prevent false alarms when a person is going to sleep or when a caregiver enters to check.  

How should I adjust the motion and alarm thresholds?

The best way to set the thresholds is through a bit of simulation.  You might want to position yourself in the bed with the iPod and watch yourself. Stay very still, then simulate the motion.  You will see the green meter move with the motion. There is a pointer to the side of the meter that indicates the setting of the motion threshold. When you are still, the green meter should be below this. When you simulate the motion, it should be above the pointer. If not, move the motion threshold lower. Best is to do this with the same amount of light as there will be in the room at night. To set the alarm threshold, choose how long the motion needs to continue before the alarm sounds. We found 20 seconds was a good tradeoff between false alarms and missing events.  If you set it shorter, expect more false alarms.  Note that these controls do not affect recordings. Recordings are made whenever there is motion, even slight short motion.

What is the logfile?

SAMi records a log that includes diagnostic information. This does not include video or audio, it simply logs technical information about the motion detection, camera communication, and faults. If you have technical problems we may request that you send us this log (choose help, then "Send Log...").

What is the lock function for?

The lock function dims the screen and secures the SAMi buttons in their current state. This reduces the chance of changing settings in SAMi while handling the IOS device or carrying it in your pocket. While locked the app is still monitoring and will vibrate in addition to playing an alarm sound when triggered.

How do I send a Logfile?

There are two ways to send us a logfile: Email from the SAMi app or with iTunes.

Email Method:
You must have an email account set up on your iOS device first.  If you do not, here are Apple's instructions.

Next:
1.  If you are using a SAMi router, go to your iOS device Wi-Fi settings and change from the SAMi network to your home network.
2.  Start the SAMi app and select "Help".  
3.  Select "Email support" from the upper right.  In the SAMi3 app this is called "Send Logfile".  
4. The app will compose an email with diagnostic information and attach the log file.  Note this does not include any video or audio recordings.  You should see a confirmation that the email was sent.

If you are not using the SAMi network router you are done.
Otherwise:
5.  Go back to the iOS device Wi-Fi settings and press the disclosure button next to your home network (the blue "i").  
6.  Select "Forget This Network".  This will prevent your iPod from automatically trying to connect to this network again.
7.  Select the SAMi network and restart the SAMi app.

After sending the email, start the iOS Mail app and check that the message has been sent (and is not stuck in the Outbox).

iTunes File Sharing method:
1. Connect your iOS device to your computer
2. Start iTunes and select the device.
3. With the device selected, choose "Apps"
4. Scroll down to File Sharing which is below the list of apps.  Use the scrollbar at the far right.
5. Select SAMi (or SAMi3) under file sharing (you may need to scroll through the apps to find it).
6. You will see the list of recordings on the right. At the bottom will be a file called SAMi.log.  Copy this to your computer.
7. Now email this to support@samialert.com

Once it is sent you should hear from us within a day.  If you do not, first confirm the email was actually sent by looking in your mail's sent items.  If it has been sent, send us a followup note.

How can I save recordings?

The easiest way to save recordings is to email them. While playing a recording touch the Email button.

An alternative is to copy them off using iTunes. This is faster if you want to save a large number of recordings. Additionally, emailing splits longer recordings into multiple parts. Using iTunes saves the recordings intact.

Start iTunes on your computer. If you have not installed iTunes you can get it here.

Connect your iOS device to the computer using the USB cable.

Open the iOS device in iTunes by clicking on the device icon:

Click on Apps

Using the scroll bar on the far right, scroll to the section called File Sharing.

Select the SAMi3 app. The recording files will be listed on the right. The recording are named using the format:

ID_M_YYYY-MM-DD_HH-MM-SS-LL.mov

For example: 7CDD9069E6CE_M_2016-08-20_13-43-48_38.mov is a recording from the camera ID:7CDD9069E6CE, was made on August 20 2016 at 13:43:48 and is 38 seconds long.

You can select one or more of these recordings and click on Save To... to save them on your computer.

There are other files and folders stored here as well. Do not delete or modify these, if you do the app may stop working properly.
