Connecting your SAMi router to the internet

Connecting your SAMi router to the internet is generally not required or recommended. The SAMi system works fine without an internet connection and keeping your camera and iOS device off the internet maximizes security and reliability.

However, if you want to use the SAMi Internet Viewing feature with the SAMi router you must configure it as follows.

NOTE: As an alternative you can stop using the SAMi router and simply setup the SAMi camera to use your home Wi-Fi network.

NOTE: To connect your SAMi router to the internet you need to use an Ethernet wire. This will probably require locating the SAMi router near your home router and may reduce the Wi-Fi signal quality at the camera and/or monitoring location.

NOTE: These instructions reconfigure the router for Access Point Mode. Access Point Mode disables the automatic IP address assignment (DHCP) on the SAMi router and instead uses the home router’s DHCP server. This means that you can no longer use the SAMi router without it being connected to another router. If you count on being able to travel with the SAMi router do not proceed.

NOTE: After reconfiguring the router .

If you haven’t already, we strongly recommend you first add a password to the SAMi Wi-Fi network. This prevents unauthorized users from accessing your home network and/or using your internet service. Instructions are here. Make sure the camera is operating properly before proceeding.

Steps to reconfigure the router for Access Point mode:

  1. Plug an Ethernet wire into the yellow jack on the back of the SAMi router. Plug the other end into a “LAN” jack on your home router.
NOTE: If you had to move your SAMi router to do this check that the SAMi camera still has a strong Wi-Fi signal.

  2. Using a computer connect to the “SAMi” Wi-Fi network.

  3. Start your web browser and enter the address “http://192.168.1.1”.

  4. Login with username “admin” and password “password”.

  5. Click on the “Advanced” tab.

  6. Click on “Advanced Setup”.

  7. If you see a link for “Wireless Access Point” click on that. Otherwise click on “Wireless Settings”.

  8. Click on “Enable Access Point Mode” or “Enable AP Mode”.

  9. Leave all settings at their default and click on the green “Apply” button.

  10. Unplug your SAMi camera, wait 5 seconds, and plug it in again.

Once the router and camera have restarted start the SAMi app and confirm the camera is working properly.

My SAMi Kit isn't working.

Try the following troubleshooting steps:

Section 1: Check the camera

  1. Confirm the camera’s power light is on.

    • If it is not check that the AC adapter is plugged in and that the cord is plugged securely into the back of the camera.

    • Try a different power outlet (mains outlet).

    • If the power light still does not turn on unplug the AC adapter from the back of your SAMi router and try it with the camera. If the power light turns on then the camera’s AC adapter has failed. If you’ve had the camera for less than a year contact support, otherwise you can order a replacement here: SAMi AC Adapter

  2. If the power light is red and rapidly blinking contact us here: Technical Support.

  3. If the power light is on and green you can skip to section 3.

  4. If the power light is on and red (not blinking) continue with section 2 below.

Section 2: Connect the camera to the SAMi router

Turn off your SAMi iPod or iPad and plug in your SAMi-3 camera near to your Wi-Fi router. If the SAMi power light turns green after about a minute then the camera is connected to the SAMi router so you can skip to section 3.

Otherwise continue the steps below:

  1. Confirm that the Wi-FI router is on. The router’s power light should be on as well as the Wi-Fi light. These are the two leftmost lights on the router.

    • If the power light is not on check that the power switch on the back of the router is pressed. Also check that the AC adapter is plugged in and securely connected to the router.

    • If the power light is on but the Wi-Fi light is not press and hold the Wireless On/Off button until the Wi-Fi light is on. This is on the side of the router. DO NOT PRESS THE RESET BUTTON ON THE BACK!

If you changed something here start the SAMi3 app and check if the camera is now working. Otherwise continue the steps below:

  2. Using an opened paper clip press the reset button on the side of the camera while watching the power light. The power light should turn off, then red, then green.

If the power light is now green start the SAMi3 app and check if the camera is working. Otherwise continue to the next section.

Section 3: Connect the iPod/iPad to the Wi-Fi network.

  1. Turn on the SAMi iPod/iPad and start the iOS settings app. Check that the Wi-Fi network is set to the “SAMi” network.

    • If it is not then change it to the network named “SAMi”.

    • if you do not see a network named “SAMi” and the router is on and the router’s Wi-Fi light is on look for a network named “NETGEARXX” when XX is a number. For example: NETGEAR84. If you see this then the router has lost its settings. Follow these steps to re-configure the router: How do I restore my SAMi Router?

If you changed something here check if the camera is now working. Otherwise continue the steps below:

  2. If the camera power light is still red contact us here: Technical Support

  3. Start the SAMi3 app and select Settings -> Reset (in the upper right).

  4. Select “Erase All App Settings”.

  5. The SAMi3 app will exit. Restart the app and follow the camera setup steps.

  • If your SAMi camera is still not working properly contact us here: Technical Support.

  • If it is working move the camera back to where you want to use it. Plug it in and confirm the power light turns green. If it does not then the camera is too far from the Wi-Fi router. Move the router closer and higher.

How do I update the SAMi app to get the latest version?

If you are not a SAMi kit owner (you are using your own WiFi router) then simply use the App Store application on your iPhone/iPad/iPad to update the SAMi3 app.

If you are using the SAMi router and have already installed the SAMi3 app using your own iTunes account then switch your iPad/iPod to your home WiFi network (to connect to the internet) and use the App Store application to update the SAMi3 app. Don't forget to switch back to the SAMi WiFi network when you are done.

If you have not yet installed the SAMi3 app on your iPad/iPod, follow these instructions:

WARNING: These steps are more complicated than we would like, but this is how Apple does it. Read through the instructions first and do not proceed unless you feel comfortable following them.
You will need an iTunes account, and even though the SAMi3 app is free an iTunes account requires a linked credit card. Set this up first if you don’t already have an iTunes account by visiting “appleid.apple.com” using a browser on a computer.

Connect the iPad/iPod to your home WiFi network so it can access the internet.

  1. Touch the settings (the gear icon at the bottom).

  2. Select the WiFi settings (second from the top in the main settings screen).

  3. Select your home WiFi network.

  4. Enter your password and choose "Join."

  5. Confirm that your network is now selected (it should have a check mark).

  6. Exit by pressing "Settings" in the upper left.

Scroll down in the settings app until you see "iTunes & App Store" and then select it.

  1. Select the Apple ID and enter in your own Apple ID.

  2. Enter your password.

  3. Press "Sign in."

Now check that your iPad/iPod device is running the latest version of iOS.

  1. Touch “Back” and select “General” -> “Software Update”

  2. If there is an update install it.

Now delete the SAMi3 app and reinstall it with your Apple ID.

  1. If necessary exit settings by pressing the home button.

  2. Delete the SAMi app. To do this press and hold on the SAMi app until you see all the icons "dancing" then touch the "X" on the SAMi app.

  3. Click the home button.

  4. Select the "App Store."

  5. Search for "SAMi3"

  6. Install the app. Be sure it is the "SAMi3 Sleep Activity Monitor By HiPass Design LLC".

Finally you need to "forget" your home network and reconnect to the SAMi Router. It is
important to "forget" your home network because if you do not, the iPod might connect to it
without warning disconnecting SAMi from the camera.

  1. Select "Settings."

  2. Select "WiFi."

  3. Select the button to the right of the currently selected network (either a blue forward arrow or "i" in a circle).

  4. Select "Forget this Network."

  5. Confirm the "Forget."

  6. Select "WiFi" in the upper left to return to the list of networks.

  7. Now select the "SAMi" network if it has not already been selected for you.

  8. Press the home button to exit settings.

I accidentally reset my SAMi router? / How do I restore my SAMi Router?

Follow these steps to restore your SAMi router:

  1. Connect a computer to the router. You can either use an Ethernet wire, or you can connect the computer to the router using WiFi. To connect via WiFi, look at the bottom of the router. The WiFi network you want to connect to is in the top white box (for example "NETGEAR79"). The WiFi password is directly below that (for example "vanillagient432")
  2. If the "Netgear Genie" pops up, select "No, I want to configure the Internet connection myself."
  3. With a browser, connect to http://192.168.1.1
  4. If prompted, log in with username: “admin” password: “password”
  5. Click on “Wireless”
  6. Enter "SAMi" for for the SSID. You need to enter this in two places, one for the 2.4Ghz Network and one for the 5Ghz Network.
  7. "None" should be selected for Security Options. Optionally you can select "WPA2-PSK [AES]" under Security Options and enter a passphrase. Note that if you do this you will need to connect your SAMi camera to the router and set up its wireless network. Set this for both the 2.4 and 5Ghz networks.
  8. Click on the green "Apply" button at the top.

The router will now restart and you are done.

My iPod Touch is not responding well to touches.

The most common cause for touch response problems with the iPod touch is using a non-Apple brand USB power adapter or lightning cable.

Next, try resetting your iPod. Start the settings app and then choose General/Reset/Reset All Settings. This will not affect your recordings.

If that doesn't work, try removing the case and see if the iPod responds better. If it works better, clean the iPod and case, this might fix it.
