Do you have a SAMi video of your seizure? Would you be willing to share it with others to help improve understanding and public awareness about epilepsy? The Epilepsy Foundation is working on its next national public awareness campaign and is looking for everyday (not hospital setting) videos of various types of seizures. Learn about the #ShareMySeizure campaign at epilepsy.com/sharemyseizure. Contact the Epilepsy Foundation at firstname.lastname@example.org to talk about sharing your video.
We're looking for feedback to help us prioritize new projects. The survey is very short and covers:
- Bluetooth heart rate monitors
- Cloud storage of recordings
- Viewing over the internet
If you haven't already, we suggest you update your iPod to iOS 9.1 and install the latest version of the SAMi3 app.
The kits come with the SAMi3 app pre-installed on the iPod. This makes it really easy to get started; just plug everything in and you are ready to go. To do this we install the app using our Apple ID. Unfortunately, this prevents easy updating as Apple will not allow the app to be updated unless you use your own Apple ID. The solution is to remove the SAMi3 app and re-download it using your own Apple ID.
This is more work for you than we would like but it is how Apple does it. The good news is you only need to do it once; after that you can easily install updates as we release them.
Note: although recommended, this is entirely optional. If SAMi is working well for you and you don't need the new features, there is no need to update!
Note: We do NOT recommend SAMi-2 kit owners update at this time.
We are offering the SAMi-3 camera for a special upgrade price of $199 to our SAMi-2 owners.
The upgrade includes the complete SAMi-3 package with a new one year warranty. Installation is easy. While the SAMi-3 box includes a new bracket and AC adapter, you can use your already installed SAMi-2 AC adapter and bracket if you prefer.
No need to trade in your old SAMi-2; keep it and use it in another location if you like.
Note that the SAMi3 app requires you run least iOS 8.0 and above and the app requires you use one of these Apple devices.
Please have your SAMi-2 QR code (the xxxxx-xxxxx code on the front of the camera) ready when ordering. Limit one upgrade per SAMi-2 camera.
Some customers have run into an issue where the SAMi-3 camera stops streaming live video. When this happens the camera is still powered on but the power light on the front is off. The only solution has been to unplug the camera and plug it back in.
We have fixed this problem with an update to the SAMi3 app. Install the version in the app store and your camera will automatically be updated to prevent this.
If this affected you we are very sorry and be assured we take reliability very seriously. If you are having any issues don't hesitate to contact us at email@example.com.
Note: this does not affect SAMi-2 cameras.
If you haven't yet, now would be a good time to sign up for our newsletter. We don't post frequently, but we do include important information about issues like this that might affect you.
Following our release of the universal (iPhone/iPad) SAMi3 app we've introduced a new JB Edition Kit based on the Apple iPad Mini 4. This replaces the previous JB Edition and has twice the storage (64GB) and a screen over four times the size (7.9" diagonal). Included in the kit is a combination PU leather* cover/stand for the iPad. We chose this case for it's excellent stability in landscape mode, perfect for running SAMi on your nightstand.
Still in all black, because that's how JB prefers it...
Price is $1399 including free shipping in the USA.
You can find all the details including ordering information here.
There are a limited number of the iPod JB Edition Kits still available, check here.
*Fake leather but really nice fake leather!
New optional low latency video mode. Trades off audio sync for much shorter live video delay and reduces time to alarm. Turn this on if you are not using the microphone or if low video delay is more important to you than having the audio in sync with the video. Look for the switch labeled "Minimize Video Delay" under settings.
New continuous recording option. You can now set SAMi to continuously record all the time, not just on motion. This is found under the Camera Settings, look for "Record Mode". Your choices are to Never record, record Motion Only, or record Everything. Note that you can still schedule recordings. If you have recordings scheduled off during the day recordings will not be made at this time even if you choose Everything for the Record Mode. Recordings are limited to 5 minutes and are made back to back.
We were surprised to learn how many people use SAMi with an iPad. We tried it and now understand why! Until now you needed to download the iPhone version and run it scaled larger. This is no longer the case.
Download the latest version from the Apple app store and give it a try. The live image is sharper and the larger screen makes adjusting settings and reviewing recordings easier than ever.
TIP: On the iPad there is a new setting called "Large Thumbnails". Turn this on to see larger and sharper previews of your recordings.
I'm writing this from the airport on our way to Epilepsy Awareness day at Disneyland. We'll have a table there demonstrating SAMi and meeting lots of great people. In celebration we have a $20 off coupon, just enter "EAD15" when checking out. Good for SAMi cameras and kits!
We at HiPass Design are very proud to have participated in this wonderful event. A special "Gala Edition" Sami Kit was a hit in the live auction. Many thanks to Tyler and Marcia Forman for their donation of the SAMi 3 camera included in the SAMi kit.
Two great events: the Chelsea Hutchison Foundation's 5K fun run and the Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado's 5K in Colorado Springs. We are so happy to meet families using SAMi and to talk with people about how our product might help them cope with some of the difficulties they face.
The new SAMi app version 1.3.0 has improvements and features we are excited about.
By default, SAMi makes and saves recordings all the time, even during the day. This can result in lots of extra unnecessary recordings cluttering up your iPhone. The Recordings Scheduler allows you to define the start and stop times for the transfer of recordings to the iPod/iPhone. To use this feature turn on (to green) the "Disable Record when scheduled off" button. Next, set the time you want recordings to start transferring and the time you want recordings to stop transferring. For example, you can choose to only save recordings made between 10pm and 7am. All other recordings will be discarded.
Smart Edge is an experimental feature that allows you to exclude motion that comes from outside the camera view from consideration in the alarm algorithm. When the border area, defined by the border size setting, is breached, the alarm is suppressed and will not be re-armed until there is no motion for two minutes. This prevents the alarm from being triggered when going to bed or when someone comes into the room and enters the monitored area. If the motion originates in the center, the alarm will still be triggered as before.
If you try the Smart Edge let us know how it works for you.
Finally, thanks to Monica for sending a photo of her customized SAMi. SAMi looks fabulous in her guardian angel costume! Anyone else have a fun picture of SAMi they want to share?
We had a great trip to the Epilepsy Foundation/Epilepsy Therapy Project Pipeline conference. Charles presented SAMi at the conference, you can watch his presentation here:
On Sunday we brought SAMi out to the Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado's 5K fun run fundraiser in Denver which was indeed great fun. It gave us a chance to meet with families from all over the area that have the challenge of Epilepsy in their lives. We even met some customers, it's great to put a face with a name!
We've extended the campaign duration to take full advantage of our incredible $25,000 matching grant. We're very close to our goal. With your help, and the help of these matching funds, we can do it!
Charles Anderson will be presenting on SAMi at the Epilepsy Foundation Pipline conference this Friday at 2:40 PDT. Charles will be one of two previous winners presenting before the 2014 Shark Tank competition.
The event is scheduled to be streamed live, we'll post an update on how to watch when it is available.
HiPass Design LLC will also be exhibiting all three days, drop by and say hi!
HiPass Design LLC has teamed up with the Epilepsy Foundation to bring you an Indiegogo fundraising campaign.
The funds raised will be used to pay for SAMi cameras and kits that will be given to charities to distribute to people who need them. Additional funds will cover the R&D for a third generation camera and other expenses necessary to ramp up production and keep the costs low.
Donations are tax deductible and we have interesting “perks” ranging from stickers, to mousepads, to pillows featuring our sleepy moon logo.
Just as important to us is social media sharing. There are links at the top of the campaign page that make it easy to share our campaign on Facebook and Twitter. Indiegogo measures these shares and it helps them decide if they are going to feature us on their front page. If they do it will be a huge boost to the campaign.
Thanks in advance for your support. We feel very strongly about helping the epilepsy community. We want to keep our product cost low and work closely with charities to get our product to people who need it.
The following is a quote from a very significant paper "Epilepsy Across the Spectrum" published by the National Academy of Sciences in 2012.
"One study has found a decreased risk for SUDEP associated with supervision at night (Langan et al., 2005), suggesting that sleeping in the same room as another adult or installing monitoring devices may offer the opportunity to help someone having a seizure during sleep. "
