Getting Started

15 questions
What is Sami?

Sami is an intelligent, configurable, video-based nighttime movement monitoring system. Using specialized software and an infrared night-vision camera, Sami alerts a parent or caregiver on their iPhone or iPad to unusual movement in the monitored location. Events can be recorded automatically so they can be reviewed later and shared with medical providers.

Is Sami right for me?

Sami works well for many families and self monitoring individuals, but here are things to consider:

Sami is designed for monitoring during sleep. You'll need a place to mount the camera in the bedroom, pointed at the sleeping location.

Sami alarms on motion. The motion can be small and does not need to be repetitive, but Sami works best when an event lasts 15 seconds or more. You can shorten the time before the alarm sounds, but settings under about 15 seconds will likely produce more false alarms than you would like.

If the person you're monitoring is a very restless sleeper, shares a bed, or sleeps with a family pet or service dog, you may get frequent false alarms.

The camera has visible lights on the front: a bright power light that can be easily covered, and a ring of dim red lights that cannot be covered because they allow the camera to see in the dark. Most people are fine with this, but some children are bothered by it (and some like it). The lights do not flicker. If the red glow is a concern, an external IR light placed away from the bed can illuminate the room invisibly. We offer this as an optional accessory which you can purchase here.

Sami requires a good quality Wi-Fi connection between the camera and your device. If Wi-Fi drops, Sami will alert you. If your home network is unreliable, consider the Sami Hub, which creates a dedicated network for Sami and doesn't require internet at all.

We want you to have the best possible monitor for your needs. If you have any questions about whether Sami is right for your situation, email us at sales@samialert.com and we'll give you our honest opinion. If after using Sami you decide it isn't right for you, let us know within 45 days and we'll take it back, no questions asked.

What do I need to make Sami work?

If you order a Sami Complete Kit, everything you need is included. Otherwise you will need:

  • An iPhone or iPad running iOS/iPadOS 15.0 or later with the Sami App downloaded
  • A Sami Camera
  • A Wi-Fi network - either your home router or the Sami Hub.
How is Sami different from a baby monitor?

Sami uses proprietary algorithms to filter out the ordinary motion and noise that a conventional monitor would report. Fine-tuning the alarm sensitivity greatly reduces false alerts, and fewer false alarms means better sleep. Sami also records events automatically, a capability not found in baby monitors, and can suppress live video and audio until an alarm is triggered.

What are the benefits of Sami?

Sami gives you the security of a system that alerts you only when necessary, configured to your situation rather than one-size-fits-all. It provides high quality, accurate recordings that are time, date, and duration stamped for documentation, review, and communication with your specialist. There are no wearables, nothing to charge, and no monthly fees.

Will Sami detect seizures?

Sami is a nocturnal movement monitor, not a medical device. It detects movement of all kinds, regardless of the movement's origin, and alarms on any motion that continues longer than the period you set. Two important notes: the camera must be able to see the motion, so heavy covers can hide small movements; and no monitor is 100% reliable. Some families concerned about nighttime seizures pair Sami with a pulse oximeter for an additional layer of monitoring. Sami comes with a 45-day return window so you can verify it works for your situation.

Will Sami alarm to all types of movement?

Sami detects rhythmic movement (shaking, rocking, head bobbing, tonic-clonic activity), non-rhythmic movement (jerks, twitches, flailing, posturing), and full-body movement (sitting up, standing, crawling). It works best with events lasting more than 15 seconds. Sami cannot detect: the absence of motion, motion lasting less than about 5 seconds, audio-only events, temperature, or heart rate changes. Here is a video demonstration of Sami's movement alarm.

Questions about your specific situation? Email sales@samialert.com.

Does Sami track breathing?

No, Sami does not detect breathing, though it can be viewed using our "Show Motion" feature which will highlight even small movements in red. Here is a video demonstration of this.

Does Sami work for all ages and weights?

Yes. Sami monitors movement visually, so it works for all ages and weights. Some people even use Sami to monitor their pets and other things!

Is Sami FDA cleared?

Sami is not FDA cleared. Sami is an abnormal movement monitor and will detect movements of all kinds and is not specifically intended for any specific use.

Can I use Sami during the day?

Sami is primarily designed as a nighttime monitor. You can use it during the day, for example to monitor naps. Sami is not designed to detect non-sleep abnormal movements, and will struggle to tell the difference between normal awake behavior and something you might want to be alerted to. This means the alarm is of limited use during waking hours, but since all movement is recorded, Sami can be useful for capturing a daytime event for later review.

Can I use Sami to record myself?

Yes. With the alarm muted, you can record your sleep for review the next day, and these recordings can also be useful for medical consultations. With the alarm on, Sami can alert you after unusual activity so you can take action if necessary, such as taking medication.

Can I take Sami with me when we travel?

Yes. You'll normally need to bring a Wi-Fi network along with the Sami Camera, since it usually isn't possible to connect the camera to hotel Wi-Fi. The Sami Hub is designed for exactly this: it's portable, needs no internet connection, and the camera connects to it automatically.

Can I use Sami while camping?

Yes, with a Sami Hub and a consistent power source. Third-party portable power stations may work, but we haven't tested or endorsed specific models.

Can Sami work with a mesh net, bed enclosure, or safe space?

Yes, many families use Sami with bed enclosures. Mounting the camera on the ceiling often provides the right angle; a bed post can work as well. If there is too much glare from the camera's infrared illuminators, you can switch them off and use an external IR lamp.

How does Sami handle privacy?

You have the option to use the app's clock mode, where you can mute the audio and replace the live video feed with a clock display for privacy; unless recordings are disabled, the camera will make recordings while clock mode is activated, and will still alert you to an abnormal movement event. We recommend agreeing on a privacy plan with the person being monitored.

Sami does not connect to the cloud - our company does not collect, store, analyze, or otherwise access your video data in any situation or way.

16 questions
What's the difference between the Sami Camera and the Sami Complete Kit?

If you don't plan to move locations often, have reliable home Wi-Fi, and already own an iPhone or iPad running iOS 15 or later, the Sami Camera alone is all you need; it connects to your device through your home Wi-Fi.

The Sami Complete Kit adds an iPad and the Sami Hub, giving you an out-of-the-box-ready monitoring system that is fully tested and pre-configured before it ships. Just plug everything in and open the Sami app to begin monitoring. It only requires access to a power outlet; no reliable home Wi-Fi needed.

What is the Sami Hub, and how is it different from a regular router?

The Sami Hub is a dedicated Wi-Fi network for Sami. It requires no internet connection, is portable, is immune to internet provider outages, is personally tested before shipping, and the Sami Camera connects to it automatically. It creates a private, secure network used only by your Sami Camera and your monitoring device.

Is the Sami Hub an internet hotspot?

No. The Sami Hub creates a closed Wi-Fi network intended only for the Sami Camera and your iPhone or iPad. It does not provide internet access.

Will the Sami Hub work if my internet is out?

Yes. The Sami Hub does not depend on internet service at all. A power outage, however, stops both the Hub and the Sami Camera. You will be alerted if the Camera becomes disconnected.

Will the Sami Camera still record without internet or Wi-Fi?

Yes. The camera continues recording to its microSD card even without internet or Wi-Fi. Note that initial setup requires a Wi-Fi connection, and live monitoring and alerts require an active Wi-Fi connection between the camera and your device.

How much can Sami record and store?

The Sami Camera comes with a 32GB microSD card, which stores 5,000 recordings locally, up to 25,000 minutes of HD video and audio. Recordings are then transferred to the Sami app, where many more can be stored depending on the available storage on your iPhone or iPad.

What kind of microSD card does the Sami Camera use?

The camera includes a 32GB microSD card. If you ever need a replacement, use only a 32GB microSDHC card rated Class 10 / U3 / V30 (we recommend SanDisk). 64GB and 128GB cards are not supported.

Does the Sami Camera zoom?

No, the camera does not zoom. If you need a closer view, mount the camera closer to the sleeping area. You can zoom in on recorded video during playback.

Does the Sami Camera have a live view?

Yes. The app provides live, real-time audio and video from the camera.

Can I use more than one Sami Camera?

Yes. The Sami Hub supports multiple cameras. However, one iPhone or iPad can only monitor one camera at a time. For simultaneous monitoring of multiple cameras, you'll need a separate device for each.

Can I monitor two cameras from the same device?

Not simultaneously. You can switch between cameras by removing and re-adding a camera in the app; you'll need each camera's password, found under Settings, then Camera Password. For simultaneous alerts from multiple cameras, use a separate device for each. If you need help, contact support.

How many iPhones or iPads can connect to one camera?

You can connect multiple devices to the camera. We recommend running no more than 4 at the same time.

Can I use other cameras in the room at night?

Yes, but turn off the other cameras' infrared (IR) lights to avoid interference. One IR light source in the room is enough for all cameras to see.

What's the difference between the Global kits and the US/CA kits?

Global kits include universal plug adapters for the Sami Hub. The camera always ships with universal adapters regardless of kit.

How close does the Sami Hub need to be to the camera?

Place the Sami Hub within roughly 30-40 feet of the camera, either in the same room or between the camera and your monitoring device.

Can I use a different network camera with the Sami app?

No. The Sami app has been optimized for use with the Sami Camera.

App & Settings

15 questions
Does the app work in the background?

The camera keeps recording to its microSD card even when the app is in the background or closed, and those recordings transfer to your device the next time you open the app. However, alerts, live monitoring, and automatic transfers do not work in the background. For the alarm to function, keep the app open in the foreground and the device plugged in. Consider enabling Apple's Guided Access feature to keep the app in the foreground.

Does the Sami app send push notifications?

No. There are no push notifications; the app must be open and in the foreground for alarms to work. You can connect multiple devices, each with the app open, so more than one caregiver receives alerts.

Can I turn the motion alarm on and off on a schedule?

Yes. You can configure the alarm to only sound between the times you specify, for example between 9pm and 7am.

What is the difference between the border setting with SmartEdge and without it?

Any motion in the border is ignored. This is used to exclude areas of regular motion (like a fan) that aren't relevant to the movement you want to monitor.

If SmartEdge is on, the border size is fixed. If there is motion in the border before motion in the center, the alarm is suppressed; if there is motion in the center first, the alarm sounds as usual. This helps prevent false alarms when a person is going to sleep or a caregiver enters to check on them.

What is the alarm sound?

The default alarm is a Navy surface ship General Alarm sound (AN/SIA-114B, to be precise). Very effective. Five other alarm sounds are available if you'd like something less "alarming."

What if I receive a text or call while using the app?

The app is suspended while you answer a call and resumes when the call ends. Notifications appear briefly and won't interrupt Sami unless you leave the app to read or respond. The camera continues recording even when the app isn't running; recordings transfer to your device once you open Sami again.

What does the motion button do?

When pressed, the live display highlights motion in red. This is useful for testing the sensitivity of the motion detection.

What happens when my device runs out of space for recordings?

The app automatically deletes the oldest non-locked recordings to make space. Locked recordings are never automatically deleted. If you have recordings you want to keep, lock them and/or copy them to your computer or email them.

How do I save recordings?

The easiest way is to email them: while playing a recording, touch the Email button. Note that emailing splits longer recordings into multiple parts. Alternatively, copy recordings using a computer, which is faster for large numbers of recordings and saves them intact.

What is the difference between the motion threshold and the alarm threshold?

The motion threshold determines how much motion counts as significant. The alarm threshold sets how long significant motion must continue before the alert activates. Both come with default settings that can be adjusted.

What is the lock function for?

The lock function dims the screen and secures the app's buttons in their current state, reducing the chance of accidentally changing settings while handling or carrying the device. While locked, the app is still monitoring and will vibrate in addition to sounding the alarm when triggered.

Why are some recordings marked in red?

Red indicates the alarm was triggered close to the time the recording was made.

Can I make recordings when I'm not using the alarm?

Yes. Recordings are made even when the alarm is disabled.

Can the alarm trigger on sound alone?

No. The alarm is based on motion.

Can I try the app without a Sami Camera?

Yes. You can use the front or back camera on your device, though you won't be able to make recordings and Apple's cameras don't work in the dark. This is mainly useful for trying out the app and for demonstrations.

Wi-Fi & Device Compatibility

8 questions
Which Apple devices work with Sami?

Sami works on iPhones and iPads running iOS/iPadOS 15.0 or later. Macs and Apple Watches are not supported. The free SAMi3 Sleep Activity Monitor app is available on the App Store.

Is there a recommended Apple device?

Any iPhone or iPad running iOS 15 or later works well. We recommend dedicating a device to Sami, since the app must be open and running in the foreground for the alarm to trigger (recordings are made even without the app running).

Does Sami work with Android devices?

Not currently; Sami is iOS-only. We are working on Android support, but it will take time. In the meantime, consider the Sami Complete Kit or Camera + iPad Bundle, which include an iPad, or a used or refurbished Apple device running iOS 15 or later.

Is Wi-Fi required for Sami to work?

Your iPhone or iPad requires Wi-Fi, but the camera can use either Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet. No internet connection is required. Sami works entirely on your local network, and running without internet (for example, on a dedicated Sami Hub) is more secure and can be more reliable. An internet connection is only useful if you want to email recordings or send us diagnostic information.

What do you recommend for Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi performance matters, so use a good quality router. The camera supports IEEE 802.11 b/g/n on 2.4GHz only. We recommend a dual-band router, which lets the camera connect to one band while your device connects to the other, improving performance. If you'd rather not depend on your home network at all, the Sami Hub provides a dedicated, private network for Sami.

My home Wi-Fi has a weak signal. Will Sami work?

If your home Wi-Fi is unreliable, consider the Sami Hub, which creates a dedicated network and doesn't need internet, or add a Wi-Fi extender to your home network.

How far from the camera can my device be?

If you're using Sami with your home network, generally 50-100 feet depending on your environment. Consider adding the Sami Hub to your purchase for greater connection strength and a dedicated, private, secure network for Sami.

Is Sami compatible with mattress pads or wearable monitors?

Sami can't pull data from third-party devices into the app, but it can be used alongside mattress pads and wearables with no interference.
