Some users have been able to successfully obtain reimbursement from insurance or purchase SAMi through a waiver. However, we've heard this is often an uphill battle, and may require an appeal. SAMi is not a medical device, and this is unfortunately the norm for motion monitors as a category - even those with FDA approval.
Luckily, there are many private organizations out there that exist to fill this gap, and purchase SAMi Kits on behalf of families and individuals of all kinds and circumstances. Click "Funding Partners" below to learn more.

We believe intervention during a seizure event may reduce the risk of SUDEP, reduce injuries, and allows caregivers to provide seizure first aid."

A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is a letter written by healthcare professionals like your doctor, OT, PT, etc. These letters explain the specific needs and why SAMi is medically necessary.
Be sure to provide specific and detailed information about safety concerns, requirements, and how SAMi can help. If you or someone else wrote the LMN, make sure the healthcare provider who wrote the prescription signs it as well.
Quality matters more than quantity when it comes to LMNs. Focus on getting a detailed and informative letter and make sure that safety risks are defined and less costly alternatives are ruled out. The most common denial reason in documentation is that it is not detailed enough or deemed not medically necessary.
HSA and FSA Funds can often be used to cover qualified medical expenses, and many customers use them to purchase a SAMi device directly through our website. Because eligibility and reimbursement rules vary by plan, we recommend contacting your HSA or FSA provider to confirm what’s required before you purchase. In some cases, your provider may request a Letter of Medical Necessity from your doctor, especially for FSA reimbursement.
If your provider requires a Letter of Medical Necessity, you can share our template letter with your doctor to help speed up the process: SAMi Letter of Medical Necessity Template
Here's how HSAs work:
Pre-Tax Contributions You can contribute to your HSA on a pre-tax basis, reducing your taxable income
Savings for Medical Expenses The funds in your HSA can be used to pay for eligible medical expenses
Reach out to your HSA provider directly to inquire about the process of using your HSA funds for a nocturnal monitor. They will provide you with the necessary guidance, including any required documentation or forms.
Please note that each HSA plan may have specific rules and guidelines regarding eligible expenses and reimbursement procedures. It's important to familiarize yourself with your plan's terms to ensure a smooth funding process.
Here’s how FSAs work:
Pre-Tax Contributions You set aside pre tax dollars through payroll deductions to use on eligible health care expenses.
Use for Medical Expenses Your FSA funds can be used to pay for qualified medical costs as defined by your plan.
Reach out to your FSA provider directly to ask about reimbursement for a SAMi monitor. They can confirm eligibility and explain what documentation is required. Many FSA plans may require a Letter of Medical Necessity from your doctor for approval.
Please note that each FSA plan may have specific rules, deadlines, and reimbursement procedures. It’s important to review your plan’s terms so you know what qualifies and what you need to submit for a smooth funding process.
Private Insurance
Although SAMi has many benefits for families, private insurance will typically only reimburse a device like ours for significant safety concerns or other well documented behaviors that could cause injury. In our experience, most SAMi customers have purchased SAMi directly and submitted their claim directly to insurance for reimbursement.
While a prescription for SAMi is not required to purchase, your health insurance may ask for one. Reach out to your insurance proivder directly to see what they need to approval a reimbursement.

It's very common to get a denial on first submission. If this happens to you, don't worry, you're not alone! Many families have successfully appealed and won.
If you're unable to successfully appeal, don't fret!
This is an all-too common outcome when it comes to useful devices and products like ours.
Luckily, there are many organizations out there who's mission is to address this exact issue by providing funding where insurance companies won't.Regardless of your income level or personal situation, cost should never stand between you and the devices you need to stay safe.
Scroll up to our "Funding Partners" section for a list of these organizations, and instruction on how to get in touch.
